Chapter Twenty-Seven

Alex

I’d played in countless games in packed arenas throughout the United States. I’d helped my team win the Stanley Cup. I’d mentored rookies. I’d signed more autographs than I wanted to think about.

None of that compared to seeing Rory sitting in the crowd during my first official game as the hockey coach for Evergreen Ridge High.

I felt like I could take on the world with her sitting there watching me and I injected that feeling into the talk I gave the boys before going back to the rink for the second period.

I glanced her way again as I settled onto the bench and noted she was sitting with her best friend and Jonah.

I still wasn’t too sure what the deal was with the two of them, and even though she’d assured me there was nothing between them, based on the way he was staring at her, I had a feeling his feelings weren’t all that platonic.

I sighed and pushed thoughts of Jonah and Rory from my mind as I turned back to the ice just as the teams faced off and the second period started.

I was pleased with the way my guys were playing. They were working together as a team, trusting their teammates to have their back, and they were playing well.

There were a few adjustments I wanted to make in practice next week, but overall, they were playing like they’d been playing together for years. For some of them, they had been. But even my new players were doing well when I sent them out and I could tell this was going to be a good season.

All too soon, the second period was over and we were schlepping back into the locker room with a three point lead.

I talked little, just encouraged them about their playing and told them to keep doing their best. Then I let them hydrate and rest up before the last period.

I also took the chance to pull my phone out of my pocket and shooting Rory a text. We hadn’t seen each other much this week because of her working and me getting ready for my game. I’d planned to ask her to dinner after the game, but it slipped my mind.

With it so close to the end of the game and a Friday night, I was hoping I could convince her to either go with me to dinner or to come back to my place. I wanted to re-introduce her to Bacon and spend time with just the two of us without the gossipers of the town looming over our shoulder.

After sending the message, I tucked my phone back into my pocket and turned to the door to the locker room when an official poked his head in to tell us we needed to get back out.

I followed my players back to the ice, confident in the type of game they were going to play for this last period. I wasn’t worried about them.

Sure enough, seventeen minutes later, we’d scored another two goals and only gave up one to secure a win for our first game of the season.
